The journey from untouched fields to a fantastic experience of Nature

Hidleren – the perfect spot.

The domes are on the mountain shelf Hidleren, which is about 40 meters above sea level.

For many years, the shelf was an important part of the farm, used for grazing and reaping.

The farm has been passed down for many generations. Kristian visited the farm for the first time when he was only one month old.

While growing up, he spent a lot of time at the farm: Christmas, ordinary school holidays, and the long summer holidays. Kristian ran after his grandfather, who single-handedly reaped the grass every summer with his scythe and hung it out to dry.

At the end of the 80’s, his grandfather passed away, and Hidleren stood untouched for over 30 years. The pasture became an overgrown woodland, and it seemed totally unlikely that the area could be used for anything at all.

OTHER PROJECTS STARTS UP

From fruit and cider production to glamping

To keep the farm alive, Kristian tried several plans. Among others, he started a project to begin with fruit growing, intended to lead eventually to cider production. His plans were not approved, so his thoughts moved on to other ideas.

Together with Robert and Laila in the Bed & Breakfast he discussed several projects for creating a sustainable business, suitable for following generations with family connections to Fjæra, Flåto and Rullestad.

Glamping shows up on the radar

A bumpy road

In 2020 the word “glamping” appeared on the radar, and an idea rapidly took shape. The road from the idea to realising it has been bumpy, to put it mildly.

It included the original zoning of the land to protect farming and Nature, expert help from geologists to confirm that the mountain shelf is secure from landslides, and thorough analysis of the location of the domes.

By June 2nd, 2021, all of the necessary approvals were finalised, and the building of the two domes began. On July 15th, “Padl” was ready, and on August 9th, “Bjødnasete” opened as well, after some busy weeks with a lot of carrying and carpentry.

So now the farm lives on, with all its old stories and memories, while at the same time visitors can and do create new memories and happy stories that can live on together with the little family farm.

About Kristian

Experience from the hotel- and restaurant business

Kristian and his grandfather in the mid eighties.

Kristian Fjæra took over the little family farm between the steep mountains, innermost) in Åkrafjord, from his grandfather. Several decades passed without any resolution to the destiny of the beloved farm. Here there were heaps of good childhood memories with his grandfather. The place had to be preserved, like the memories.

Then in 2020, at last, came the idea that would preserve the farm: to offer an overnight stay that was more than that. It should be a complete experience of this wild and beautiful fjord country.

That was how the project to start Åkrafjorden Glamping began, and in July 2021 it was ready to open.
